Mission action plan
‘To live out the Gospel of the Lord in Word, Sacrament and Action’
The Church of St Richard of Chichester, Lockleys, is a progressive orthodox parish that is firmly grounded in living out the Gospel.
As a parish, we look to continually move forward, ensuring that we hear and reflect upon the scriptures through quality preaching, morning and evening prayer, where the scriptures are read, and opportunities to explore the scriptures more deeply through Bible studies.
As we gather as a community of faith, we are joined as one in the body of Christ. At the heart of this is our Baptism and the celebration of Holy Eucharist. St Richard’s is dedicated to growing a sacramental understanding to the way in which we live and interact with the world. As we celebrate life, all sacraments are offered at St Richard’s on a regular basis.
Christ calls us to follow him, to live out a life in action. St Richard’s is dedicated to the mission work of the church locally and in the wider community. Through our activities and hospitality, we are dedicated to ensuring that the ‘word’ is heard and the hospitality of the table is shared.

The 2012 St Richard’s Writing Competition – this year the theme being My Journey. It follows and builds upon the very successful themes of 2010 – My Sacred Space and 2011 – My Relationship. We are also pleased to have Bendigo Bank and Abbotts Printers as sponsors this year.
Last year’s entries bought tears of joy to many as well us uncovered some serious talent. Magnificently displayed they contained heartfelt and very personal journeys that also resonated with and connected others.
The My Journey writing competition is NOW OPEN to any person over the age of 60 living in the West Torrens or Charles Sturt LGA’s. Entries close August 1st.
The theme is very broad, My Journey may be a travel story or holiday you have taken with family, friends or on your own. It may be a journey of the heart or love. The Journey may be an expression of Life or personal growth you have experienced. It may be a Journey of faith, or a journey you have longed to make. It can be one that is grounded in realism or founded in the imagination. It is your journey, and no one can take that way from you. What has it been like? How has it changed you? Was the destination important or the discoveries on the way?
This Competition will be followed by an Awards Presentation (Launch) on September 16th. Entries will be displayed in the Church as part of an Exhibition until Mid October. The exhibition is an important way of recognising peoples talents, spiritual journeys and knowledge with family friends and younger generations. Please if you feel you would be able to assist in the running of this project or an any small way contact the parish office.
Please download the Flyer to see Conditions of entry and obtain an official entry form.

Prayer school

Session one
An introduction to prayer: What it is and is not
Friday, 11 November, 7:00 – 10:00
John Michael Talbot, a Franciscan friar and musician refers to prayer as a mystical union and loving embrace between God and ourselves. Why is it then that for most of us, ‘Prayer has become such a burdened word and practice’?
This introduction to prayer deconstructs our old beliefs about prayer and allows us to discover new and exciting ways of being in union with the Creator God.
Discover the richness of ancient prayers, the beauty of contemporary styles of prayer, and the freshness of creative praying.
Session two
Lectio Divina: The art of praying with the scriptures
Saturday, 12 November, 9:00 am – 12:00 pm
Lectio Divina is the sacred art of praying with the scriptures. Once practiced only by those in monastic and religious communities, its rediscovery is today enriching and connecting a wider Christian community.
In Lectio Divina, we read or listen to the word of God, and allow it to speak to us, to enter into our being. In us, the word of God changes and transforms us such that we become that which we contemplate, that is, the word of God; we become as it were the word or prayer incarnate. By being transformed through Lectio Divina we begin to affect those around us. We become as St Theresa of Avila often said, the hands, feet, and eyes of God, we become God’s instruments on earth. Through us God is works in the world.
This workshop contains both theoretical and practical input. Discover for yourself what it means to be open to the transforming word of God.
Session three
Contemplating the San Damiano Crucifix
Saturday, 12 November, 1:30 – 4:30 pm
The San Damiano Crucifix lies at the heart of Franciscan spirituality. The Crucifix is a magnificent piece of Byzantine art, or more correctly, iconography; a brilliant pictorial of the Gospel of St John.
Through exploring the images of the crucifix, and hearing something of its place in Franciscan spirituality, we learn how it is possible to kneel down a broken person and rise a servant of Christ.
Session four
Praying with songs of prayer from Taizé
Sunday, 13 November, 12:30 – 5:30 pm (includes breaks)
Taizé is a tradition known for its meditative music. Arising from an ecumenical Christian monastic community in France, the Taizé songs of prayer now resonate world wide. Music includes chants and icons from the Eastern Orthodoxy. The emphasis is on simple phrases, usually lines from Psalms or other pieces of Scripture, repeated and sometimes also sung in canon.
This workshop has been structured to provide participants with an understanding of the context in which the songs of prayer from Taizé emerged and the concept of song as prayer.
Using knowledge gained in this workshop and adapting it to the local situation, participants will put together and participate in a contemplative Taizé Prayer service.

Baptisms
Jesus began his preaching and healing ministry by being baptised in the River Jordan. The vast majority of followers over the two thousand years since then have begun their Christian lives with baptism.
In the Anglican church, many people are baptised when they are babies; however, when people convert to Christianity as adults, they can receive an adult baptism. It is a ‘once and for all’ sacrament, it can not be redone or undone.
At baptism, the symbols of water (cleansing), oil (setting apart) and the candle (to shine as a light in the world) are used.
Baptisms take place during worship at St Richard’s 9:00 am Sunday service or outside worship in exceptional circumstances.
