The Canning Stock Route:
"one of the most isolated tracks on Earth"

Well 49 (stacks of good water here, July '97)
A series of wells were constructed one day's travel apart for a mob
of cattle. They were timbered A-frames to lift water to troughs. As you
can see, they have fallen into disrepair. Some wells have been restored
by 4X4 clubs. These clubs also erect CSR
signs.
Construction of the CSR was historically significant. It was an amazing
achievement to establish more than 50 wells and other cattle watering points
traversing some 1800km of inhospitable desert.
It was during 1906 that Alfred Canning's party surveyed the route and penetrated
the vast desert region coercing local guides to lead them to water. The
final wells were not sunk until 1910.
Many Gecko's (pictured!) and smaller animals are found in the
desert. 1000's of tracks can be found in the sand. You'll also see camels;
trying and get a photo of one of the kids near them was a tall order! The
Gecko was more cooperative.

Weriaddo (Well 51?). Big Inoperative windmill but plenty of water available
via bucket and cemented well.
